Pruning Shrubs

Trimming ornamental shrubs, planted individually, in a group or forming a hedge, is an event that ensures their proper development and perfect shaping of the crowns. Thus, each shrub will harmonize with other elements of the overall garden composition. We need to differentiate the kinds of pruning shrubs, as it is very important. If you have any questions, it would be better to call your professional gardener to give you proper advice and to do the maintenance of your hedges.

Pruning after planting

The stems are shortened to a small height – the aim is to stimulate the creation of the root system and the formation of a denser vegetative mass. In deciduous species it is shortened by about ½ from the height of the stems. In the case of hedge-forming plants, the height of pruning varies from 10 cm to 40 cm which is required, in accordance with the requirements for the respective species. It is performed in early spring, when there is no active juice movement.

Pruning for formation

This is maintenance after flowering and the goal is to add shape and location to the crown, and with each replacement of the branch new shoots are formed. Intertwined, curved and inwardly growing branches are removed to ensure proper skeletal development, which forms the symmetry of the crown. When cut higher, i.e. the branches remain longer, they appear in large numbers, but with shorter and thinner shoots and vice versa, with lower maintenance of the shoots with a small number, but with a larger thickness and length. During the summer months, early in the morning or late in the following hours are suitable to avoid high daytime temperatures. To achieve the correct geometric shapes, a template made of hard cardboard or boards is used.

Pruning for storage

This type of pruning aims to remove withered and diseased branches and to improve the overall appearance of shrubs and hedges. It is performed every 4-5 years or as needed. They are most suitable with periods without active storage – early spring or late autumn.

Pruning for rejuvenation

This type or shrub trimming aims to improve the overall appearance of old shrubs and hedges. However, when care is taken, in older plants there is a bareness of the branches, it appears on the “holes” in the crown, which violates their decorative qualities. This type of pruning shortens the skeletal branches, thus stimulating the creation of new ones that will fill the gaps and improve the overall appearance of the bushes. It is made in early spring, and in the first year the tops of the hedge (shrub) are subordinated to the selected height.
