June Garden Care Guide

The month of June is approaching, so let’s review the key tasks for your garden. Always consult your professional gardener for advice, care, and maintenance tailored to your garden.

Grass Areas

Weeds often appear in lawns, and wheat weeds can spread when you mow regularly. You can control deciduous weeds using herbicides carefully.

Mow your lawn once a week in June, keeping grass height around 3–4 cm. Water daily if possible. In unusually dry weather, water in the morning and evening. Use sprinklers to avoid washing seeds together, ensuring the soil absorbs water slowly and deeply.

Watering Tips

Adjust watering frequency based on your grass type—some need more moisture, others tolerate drought. Clay soils hold water longer, while well-drained soils dry out faster. Remember, England rarely experiences soil drying, so water accordingly.

Fertilization

Apply nitrogen fertilizer to boost growth and maintain vibrant green grass. Fertilize in June, July, and August, roughly 3–4 days after mowing. Use slightly moistened soil and apply fertilizer in the cooler hours. Spread 20–24 grams per square meter of ammonium nitrate or about 35 grams per square meter of compound fertilizer.

Flower Beds

Water flower beds consistently but avoid overwatering. Loosen soil regularly to improve aeration. Remove bulbs of tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils as their leaves dry and yellow. Deadhead overblown flowers in both garden beds and potted plants on balconies or terraces.

Watch for aphids and mites, which often attack in June, and act promptly to protect your plants.

Planting Perennials

Plant seedlings of white daisies, echinacea, rudbeckia, antirrhinum, and other flowering perennials. Choose healthy plants with buds and leaves. Prepare the garden soil carefully and water regularly if rain does not fall. Pay special attention to marsh iris, regular iris, and bulbous iris.

Planting Annuals

During the last ten days of June, plant hardened seedlings of heat-loving annuals such as ageratum, tagetes, begonias, Chinese carnations, petunias, phlox, zinnia, and celosia. Plant during cloudy weather or in the evening after 5 pm, then shade the plants for a few days.

Simultaneously, plant hardened dahlias and tuberous begonias for vibrant summer displays.
